“Delivered:” is a series in which we look at crowdfunded ideas that have successfully shipped to their supporters. We dive into the final product, after its long journey from concept to fulfillment.
After playing a variety of board games, I've come to expect a certain level of quality from the design and manufacturing of a game. The Island of El Dorado has taken that expectation and turned it on its head. Everything from the box, to the tiles, and game figures are extremely well done. The Island of El Dorado through it's Kickstarter has created a new category of luxury boardgames.
Having been involved with Manufacturing games in the past, I can honestly say I don't know how they manufactured such a high quality game at their MSPR price point. It's like buying a painting at an inheritance sale, only to find out later its worth 10x the value. Hats off to the the El Dorado team, they created a luxury game at a standard games price.
The game is quick to learn and play, but has a lot of replay value. They did a great job in keeping the rules simple and easy to understand. I relate learning the rules to how Days of Wonder creates their games; understanding how to play the game is fairly easy, but the strategy has multiple layers for added complexity.
To play the game, the explorers start off with on a single tile and expand outward exploring the board. As you explore you can find different resources, shrines, or the cave. You can focus on building and gathering resources, fighting with an army, or sacrificing offerings to the shrines. In order to win, you have to sacrifice an offering to each of the shrines, but there are multiple choices you can make along the way. I won't go into the full details of how to play as you can find the rule book, videos, and and game play on their Kickstarter and website, but needless to say its a lot of fun and everyone that played enjoyed it.
Since the first printing of El Dorado was such a hit, they actually sold out of the first run. If your interested in getting the board game, you still have time for the re-print if you act quick and pre-order it. The spirit of adventure is alive in the game of El Dorado.
