“Game On” is a series in which we examine the companies, creators, and games in crowdfunding. We look at the journey, ideas, and concepts the creators wanted to bring to market with their product.
The Brigade was created by Red Genie Games, which was started by two Melbourne based creative board game enthusiasts Alex Wynnter and Ben Hoban. The original idea for Brigade was thrown together at a local board game design incubator but Alex has a long history of game design. Creating his first game when he was 23. Ben also has a long history and love of gaming. The goal of Red Genie Games was to bring people original thematic games. The Brigade was the very first game that they have released as a company and they have received a lot of support from the gaming community.
They launched their new game on Kickstarter August 1st of 2017, staying up the entire night before putting the finishing touches on their campaign. The Brigade received immediate support and was able to hit their funding goal within only one week. Within a month, Red Genie Games was able to raise over $144,000 through their campaign. Items that they added with their stretch goals included custom flame shaped meeples, lamination, co-op rules, 8 bonus location tiles, and more!
The Brigade is a fantasy firefighting game that is based in the town of Tinderbox where fireballs are raining down on the city. The fire warden is gone and it is up to four rival fire wardens to build up their brigade of helpers and protect the citizens. Fire wardens can recruit other characters that add strength to their crew. Putting out the fires gains the loyalty of the citizens and can get you elected as Fire Chief to win the game.
The board for The Brigade is a set of tiles that create a grid. The tiles are randomly placed for a uniquely placed map every time. At the start of each turn a player draws an event card to determine which locations the fireballs are landing on. During the game players spend actions to move their crew and water wagon around the city managing their water resources to control the outbreak. When the fire is extinguished they can spread the word of their heroic deeds to gain loyalty of key locations of the town. If enough of the loyalty tile are won then you can win the game.
