“Game On” is a series in which we examine the companies, creators, and games in crowdfunding. We look at the journey, ideas, and concepts the creators wanted to bring to market with their product.
Assembly was created by the husband and wife team of Wren Games. Janice and Stu were first drawn to tabletop games over 5 years ago with the game Pandemic. They live with their two girls in the UK. Wren games mission is to design games that are quick to learn, intuitive to play, easy to remember, eminently replay-able, and fun to play. Janice and Stu’s background experiences have made them realize that there is a need in the gaming industry for games that are inclusive to those with disabilities and to also be sensitive to all types of people.
Assembly was designed to be inclusive. Wren Games is very passionate about creating a place where everyone feels heard and included. One of the things that the designers were concerned with was making a game that could be played by people with disabilities. There is a section at the end of the game where there are signs that can be taught to people so that deaf people can be included in the game. The creators were also very careful with their name selection to be politically correct while making the name cards. There are names in the role cards that are of Asian, African, and European descent. The game is also designed so that someone with color blindness will have no problem playing the game. Wren games is an example in encouraging others to also provide games that are accessible to those with disabilities.
Janice and Stu are big Kickstarter supporters, so they knew that it would be the perfect place to launch their new game. They were able to successfully raise the money that they needed for their game production in less than one month. During their campaign they hosted a space pun contest, interviews, puzzles, and gave frequent updates to their supporters to encourage interaction. Stu worked very carefully to make sure that all of the details of the game were perfect, reprinting cards to ensure that everything was up to the quality that they desired for the game.
