“Delivered:” is a series in which we look at crowdfunded ideas that have successfully shipped to their supporters. We dive into the final product, after its long journey from concept to fulfillment.
Get ready to enter the world of Revilo. Created by Brian Colin, a father wanting to spark his son's imagination, the Revilo Creature Collection contains more than 140 pages of imaginary beasts that inhabit the world of Revilo. Gorgeous illustrations are paired with photos of creatures sculpted by the author, along with the history of Revilo and information on each beast and the locations they can be found.
As a mother of a budding Harry Potter fan, I knew my son would enjoy reading the Revilo Creature Collection. He loved flipping through the pages and asking about each creature. After he finished with the book, he immediately went to his art table and started drawing his own creatures. Soon, he was telling me all about how his creatures fit into the world of Revilo, just like he had seen in the book.
Revilo's appeal reaches beyond children's imaginations, though. As a creative writing major, I was assigned many exercises in world-building, and I wish I had Revilo then to use as an example. Colin thought out every detail and the creatures go way beyond the typical dragons or unicorns that inhabit fantasy worlds; they are unique to Revilo, and Colin was not afraid to dive into the unknown to create each one.
