“Game On” is a series in which we examine the companies, creators, and games in crowdfunding. We look at the journey, ideas, and concepts the creators wanted to bring to market with their product.
The Big Score was created by Van Ryder Games. VRG was started in 2011 by A.J. Porifirio. A.J. has a love of thematic games that immerse the players. He has an affinity for solitaire games inspiring his creation of Hostage Negotiator, which is VRG’s best selling game that continues to expand. Hostage Negotiator won solitaire game of the year in 2015. Since then VDR has added two new faces to the team with Evan Derrick as their Game Designer, and Shaun Varses and the manager of Business & Product Development. Van Ryder Games is known for their well thought out character roles and story development within their games. Big Score is no exception to this with their fun collection of crime bosses and heists.
Van Ryder Games approached Kickstarter as a well known game launching site to get the word out about The Big Score. They were able to reach their funding goal the day after they launched and then start reaching for their stretch goals. With the stretch goals VDR added some new crime bosses that have special abilities to spice up the game. They also went on to be able to provide a larger diamond for starting out the game, and a few more cards and poker chips.
The storyline behind The Big Score according to VRG is: “The vault at Centennial City Bank is holding a record amount of loot. As a notorious crime boss, robbing the vault is always on your mind. But the job is too big for just one crew. Gather your friends to become rival crime bosses and work together to pull off the biggest heist the city has ever seen. Once you and your new partners in crime are inside the bank vault, it’ll be every boss for himself! Will you escape with more loot than your rivals and win The Big Score?”
Players will select from crime bosses like The Ice Queen,The Don, The Brute, LA FEMME, etc to run their operation. A crew will then be selected and given jobs underneath these crime Lords. The game is played in two distinct halves. During the first half of the game the players work to gather their crew to assist with the jobs. During the second half of the game is the climax where the players attempt to pull off their heists amid the presence of watchful cops. Some of the crime Lords that can be chosen will give players advantages in the final stretch of the game. The player with the most money at the end of the game is the winner.
