“Game On” is a series in which we examine the companies, creators, and games in crowdfunding. We look at the journey, ideas, and concepts the creators wanted to bring to market with their product.

The 7th Continent was created by the French board game publisher called Serious Pulp. Serious Pulp was founded in 2010 by Ludovic Roudy and Bruno Sautter. These two men have been friends since childhood and have been working together for almost 15 years in the digital communications agency. Role playing games and game books played a significant part in both of their childhoods. Ludo started working on prototypes for what became The 7th Continent when he was only 11.

The first game that was published and designed by Serious Pulp was Steam Torpedo that was a tactical Submarine combat game for 2 players. They then went on to publish 8 Master’s Revenge, a martial arts game for 2 to 4 players that revamps the standard combat game genre. The 7th Continent is the 3rd game that they have gone on to publish. It was released on Kickstarter on September 29, 2015. The night that they released they were able to meet several stretch goals within the first ten minutes. They were able to raise all of the money for their project in a little under a month. They went on to create an expansion to the 7th continent.

The reason that Serious Pulp Decided to launch The 7th Continent with Kickstarter was because there was a lot of investment that this game implied for it’s conception, design, and illustrations. After two years of working on the game they knew that they could not continue to invest any more time without knowing that it would be successful. With their Kickstarter launch they were able to see the fruits of their labor and it helped them to finish. The goal with The 7th Continent was to create a game that was the largest game board ever created where you could choose your own path.

The storyline behind the The 7th Continent is that you are an explorer who has previously visited the continent. During your time there a curse was placed upon you. You are returning to the continent in an attempt to lift the curse. You and four other explorers set off on an epic adventure where you progress at your own pace through this mysterious land. The game board is built piece by piece with your terrain and event cards. In order to live through the dangers that you will encounter on the continent you must use all of your survival skills and craft items, hunt and fish to get food, learn for you benefit from your environment, spend experience points to get new abilities etc. You can find out more about Serious Pulp, The 7th Continent, or their Kickstarter campaign by visiting the links below.
