“Game On” is a series in which we examine the companies, creators, and games in crowdfunding. We look at the journey, ideas, and concepts the creators wanted to bring to market with their product.
The Estates is part of a new line that has been created by Capstone games called Simply Complex. This new line of games has lots of wooden components, low roles overhead, and complex strategies while playing under one hour. The Climbers and The Estates are the first titles that are in this new line. And they are soon to release Race for the Chinese Zodiac. Capstone games was started in August 2015 as a way to make hard to find heavy games available throughout the world. Other games that have been created by Capstone Games include Lignum, Three Kingdoms Redux, Wildcatters, and the Coal Trilogy.
The Estates Project was released on April 11th and funded in 24 hours. They were able to reach their first stretch goal in two more days. Capstone games was able to host a live play through of the game on youtube for viewers to see. They were able to meet a stretch goal after that including a special sleeve, custom designed box, and also a numbered certificate for all of the Kickstarter backers. Other upgrades that they were able to offer by meeting stretch goals were updates to the mayors top hat, 60K building permits, and silk screening all of the floor cubes of the game.
The storyline of The Estates is that the city council recently developed a zoning map for an urban area called The Estates, The zoning maps call for two rows of four buildings each. The mayor realizes that he can capitalize on the opportunity and builds a mansion on one of the lots which doubles the value of that row of homes. The city council catches wind of this and makes a deal that when the rows of homes are finished that the uncompleted row is to be torn down resulting in a huge loss.
In the game The Estates players take turns holding auctions for various pieces. Once the pieces have received their highest bidder, the player is then either able to give the piece to the paying player or to pay that player and keep the piece themselves. They then must build their building in the estates. Builders earn positive or negative points based off of where their building are located within the estates. There are different types of cubes that are available for the players to purchase that include floor cube, rooftop cube, building permit, Mayor, or Cancel Cube. Each of the players gets a company certificate, and the money for the buildings is exchanged by a set of checks.
